How to choose a dining table

There’s lots to think about when shopping for the perfect dining table for your home. Would you like the tactile feel of a real oak dining table - or maybe the peace of mind that comes with a heat-resistant surface? Perhaps a modern dining table is your thing, and your dream table is sleek glass or marble; or you’d simply like a small dining table for a cosy corner of your kitchen. Whatever you’re trying to achieve, it’s important to think about how you’ll use your dining room table - family meals, big gatherings, craft projects or working from home - as well as what style and materials you’ll still love for years to come. No two homes are the same, which is why our range includes so many different options - so there’s a dining table to suit every kind of family life.

What size dining table should you buy?

Many people struggle to make a decision on the size of their dining table - too small, and your guests will be bumping elbows, but too large, and you’ll struggle to walk around it easily. A good rule of thumb is to ensure you have 90cm of clearance on every side of the table that will have chairs - enabling you and your guests to pull out their seat and get settled comfortably. The shape matters too - a round dining table is ideal for couples and smaller families, creating a cosier feel while saving on floorspace, but a rectangular table has more space for buffet-style meals with lots of serving dishes. If your space is on the smaller side, but you regularly host lots of guests, consider an extendable dining table - with a small footprint for every day, but still able to seat plenty for special occasions.

How big are extendable dining tables?

Our extendable dining tables are available in a range of sizes to suit all kinds of spaces - from a 4 seater table that extends to seat 6 people, right up to tables that seat 8 or 10 guests. Most extending dining tables will extend to seat an additional 2 people, but some add space for 4 additional place settings. To ensure the table will fit in your space when fully extended, be sure to check both sets of measurements against the dimensions of your room - remembering you need at least 90cm of clearance on all sides you plan to place dining chairs.
